Platinum, Ink and Pink

Platinum, Ink and Pink brings together selected works from five series made over the past five years: Found, Pink, Poppy, Peony, and Fossil. The photographs were captured on film and printed using both pigment-based and platinum palladium processes. The show reflects an ongoing interest in the relationship between time, perception, and meaning—how we interpret and assign significance to what we see and remember.

Each series approaches this from a different angle. Found is built around the act of noticing—recognising moments in daily life that are often overlooked. These images explore how perception shifts over time and how memory alters what we think we know.

Pink looks at the colour as a cultural and emotional signifier. Depending on context, pink can suggest softness, seduction, disruption, or calm. In this series, it acts as a lens to examine how colour influences our reading of space and form, and how personal or collective associations shape what we see.

Poppy and Peony examine the way meaning is projected onto nature. Poppy reflects on the way this flower has been tied to both conflict and commemoration, and how that history sits beside its visual delicacy. Peony looks at how mythology and symbolic meaning become entangled with form—how a flower can carry stories of healing, envy, and transformation, depending on who is looking.

Fossil considers deep time—how humans struggle to comprehend scales of time beyond our own lives. The plants in this series existed before bees and remain largely unchanged. They raise questions about survival, change, and the limits of human understanding in the face of geological time.

Across all five series, the work considers how we create meaning through images—how memory, culture, and context inform what we see and how we interpret it.

Poppy: Poppies have been used to represent peace and death throughout human history. Used for opium during war times or as offerings to the dead for the Ancient Greeks and Romans. They have a powerful meaning in modern Australian culture as well as showing an incredible beauty of strength and fragility.

Fossil - A series of images that explores the human mind's struggle to grasp the vastness of time and our fragility within it. The collection features prehistoric plants that evolved before the existence of bees, serving as tangible reminders of our temporal limitations. Unlike stone fossils, which often feel distant and abstract, these living fossils offer a tactile immediacy. They highlight the dual nature of life - its persistent drive to survive alongside its inherent fragility.

Peony: Peony is named after Paeon, who was the student of Asclepius, the Greek God of medicine and healing. Paeon was the physician of the gods and Asclepius became jealous of him, which Zeus saved him of his wrath by changing him into a Peony flower.

The symbol of these flowers and cultural significance is what interests me in these images, how their forms influence the viewer and interpretation from their personal experience.
