Poppy No. 1, 2020 - 2026
"Poppy" is an ongoing series that examines the symbolism of the poppy in contemporary culture, its association with memory, sacrifice, and the fragile persistence of life. The poppy became a potent emblem for the Commonwealth after Lieutenant-Colonel John McCrae’s 1915 poem, its lines
“We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.”
Form the core of this work set out to translate those lines into image, the poppy’s paradox of fragility, resilience and strength.
